BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO

The College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine

        The College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine is one of the twenty colleges of the Yangzhou University. The root of the college goes back to the Private Tongzhou Teachers School founded in 1902. In 1952, the Agricultural Section of the school was moved to Yangzhou and became the Department of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine of the Su’bei Agricultural College. In 1992, the college and six others in Yangzhou were integrated into the present Yangzhou University and the Department of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine was upgraded as
the College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine in 1998.

        The college is presently consisted of two departments with three specialties and eight secondary disciplines. The Department of Veterinary Medicine has the rights for awarding PhD degrees in Veterinary Medicine (primary discipline), Preventive Veterinary Medicine (National and Provincial Key Discipline), Clinical Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Biomedicine (secondary discipline) and Master degrees in Veterinary Medicine (primary discipline), Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Biomedicine, Microbilogy and Zoology (secondary disciplines). As for the Department of Animal Science, one secondary discipline (Animal Genetic Breeding & Reproduction, Provincial Key Discipline) has the right for awarding PhD degree and three (Animal Genetic Breeding & Reproduction, Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, and Agricultural Technology Popularization) for master degrees. In addition, the college has the post-doctoral work station in Veterinary Medicine, the National Center for Special Toxicity Testing, Ministry Key Open Laboratory of Animal Infectious Diseases, Provincial Center for Animal Transgenesis, and Provincial Laboratory of Animal Preventive Medicine.

        Presently, the college has 148 faculty members, including twenty professors and 36 associate professors. Since “the Seventh Five-year Plan”, the college has won over 100 research rewards from the National and Provincial Governments. Presently, more than 100 National or Provincial Government-supported research programs are actively being undertaken, with a total research fund of more than 20 million Yuan (RMB) and extensive collaborations with institutions of developed Countries.

        The college has a good tradition of and insists on co-development of teaching, research and social service. Through over 30-years effort, a series of products have been developed, including a variety of traditional and recombinant vaccines for animal diseases, which not only create great economic and social benefits, but also provide great financial supports for high quality education.

        Owning to its high-quality faculty equipped with advanced facilities, plus long history, good tradition and fine academic atmosphere, the college has cultivated thousands of talented graduates. Presently, it has over 1473 full-time students, including 1160 undergraduate students, 262 MS students and 51 PhD students ( include postgraduate students from other countries ). The college holds it as her mission to build first-class disciplines, to cultivate first-class graduates, and to provide first-class social service.
