The Mechanical Engineering College of Yangzhou University (YUMEC) was merged out of several existing departments in July 2002 to educate qualified technical and engineering personnel. Its history dates back to the establishment of Yangzhou Institute of Technology in 1952. At present YUMEC consists of six academic sections, namely:
● Mechanical Manufacture
● Mechanical Design
● Mechatronic Integration
● Metallic Materials
● Automobile Engineering
● Industrial Design
YUMEC offers 4-year undergraduate programs in the following five areas:
■ Machine Designing, Manufacturing and Automation
■ Automotive Engineering
■ Agriculture Mechanization and its Automation
■ Metallic Material Processing and Control
■ Industrial Design
YUMEC offers master degree graduate programs in the following areas:
■ Mechanical Manufacture and Automation
■ Mechanical Design and Theory
■ Automobile Engineering
■ Materials Processing Engineering
YUMEC has a strong teaching staff led by well-known scholars and experts in China. Among its 131 teaching staff are 8 professors, 25 associate professors, and 38 lecturers. One of the professors in the college is entitled to State Fund for Specialists. Over the past years YUMEC has brought out over five thousand graduates. Many of them have become highly successful scientists and experts in various fields. The college currently has around 1000 full-time students and 600 adult students for further education.
YUMEC gives first priority to academic research and course construction and strives to improve efficiency and quality. In the recent years, it has undertaken over 40 research projects, including a state “high-tech 863 project” and various other national projects, thereby winning various awards from relative national and provincial authorities. The faculty members each year have over 80 research articles published in national key academic journals. Some of these articles are included in SCI and El.
YUMEC takes as one of its missions to contribute to local economic development. It strives to relate its teaching and research programs to social and economic needs. For this purpose, it has set up various research organizations, including Mechatronic Research Institute, Metallic Material Research Center, Bosch Yangzhou Diesel Training Center, and Duowei New Technology Company.
YUMEC holds that international exchange and cooperation and the interaction of different cultures will promote the college's development and elevate its academic level. It has established ties with institutions of higher education in 5 countries. More than 10 foreign scholars have taught, delivered lectures, or participated in cooperative academic research programs here over the past few years. A considerable number of faculty members were sent abroad for academic visits, advanced studies, research cooperation or attendance at international academic conferences. Besides exchanges at the faculty and researchers level, exchanges at the student level are also steadily developing. The number of international students in the college is on the rise.
